Sunstone sits inside one of Southern California's genuinely wild places, and it behaves like it. Black bears move through the property. Mule deer graze the meadow at dusk. Coyotes call across the ridge at night, bobcats hunt the treeline, and a mountain lion passes through more often than most guests would guess.
Above, the sky does its own show. Big Bear is home to a famous pair of nesting bald eagles, and hawks ride the thermals along the ridgeline all day. In the pines you'll hear Steller's jays arguing, Clark's nutcrackers working the cones, mountain chickadees, and the drum of a northern flicker on a dead snag.
And the forest itself is the reason all of it is here. At this elevation you're standing in old Jeffrey pine - bark that smells like butterscotch in the afternoon sun - alongside sugar pine with its foot-long cones, white fir, incense cedar, California black oak, and the lodgepole pine that only appears once you're high enough.
Guests arrive expecting a venue. What they talk about afterward is the quiet, the smell of the pines, and the deer that showed up at breakfast.
Sleeping up to 40 across the property
A mix of private rooms in Sunstone Lodge, the four private cabins, and shared accommodation - so a group of forty can be housed together on one property, with the privacy tiers a wedding party or a training cohort actually needs.
Sunstone Lodge

Four private cabins, each sleeping four. Every one spacious and fully self-contained:

Guests aren't just housed here, they're hosted. Cook breakfast on your own deck, soak in a jacuzzi tub with the pines outside the window, light a fire before bed - then walk fifty yards to rejoin the group. Very few properties at any price offer both that privacy and that togetherness.

What to bring at 8,200 feet
Big Bear, California, in the San Bernardino Mountains. Drivable from Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego. Palm Springs and Joshua Tree are close enough to extend the trip.
- Layers. Nights are cool in every season, cold in winter.
- More water than you think. Altitude dehydrates you faster.
- Real shoes if you plan to walk the trail.
- Food stored indoors. The bears are genuinely here.
